This page contains several reputable resources to assist students and parents with issues that are often presented in my school counseling office.  These resources have been collected from recent conferences I have attended, articles / books I have read, and from the web sites / journals of the professional organizations to which I belong (New York School Counseling Association, American School Counseling Association and National Association of College Admissions Counselors)

Healthy Dating Relationships  /  Recognizing Signs of Teen Dating Abuse

Respect Love, Love Respect. February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.

New

To promote teen dating violence awareness, the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) has launched this new dating abuse initiative:  Respect Love, Love Respect - which is  geared toward teens and young people age 16 - 24.  The site provides information and resources on dating abuse and healthy relationships; users can learn how to get help, help a friend, and get involved in their community

10 Warning Signs that your friend may need help How to spot the warning signs that might mean a friend is in trouble and needs help
Early Warning Signs That Your Date May Eventually Become Abusive From the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ACADV).  Also includes a dating bill of rights and ideas for developing safety plans
Teen Power and Control Wheel Interactive graphic showing the behaviors that an abuser uses (the spokes), the types of violence that holds everything together (the rim) with power and controla at the center.  Provides visual demonstrations & diaries designed to educate teens on effective methods for handling specific situations in unhealthy relationships
Teen Equlality Wheel Shows behaviors associated with a healthy relationship based upon equality and respect.  A graphic that counters the power and control wheel.  Describes the changes needed to move from an abusive to nonabusive partnership

Love is Respect 24-hour National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline.  Resources for teens, parents friends and family members

Self-Injury

approach, professional network, and educational resource base,which is committed to helping you and others achieve an end to self-injurious behavior
ASHIC (American Self-Harm Information Clearinghouse) AHSIC's mission is to increase public awareness of the phenomenon of self-inflicted violence and the unique challenges faced by self-injurers and the people who care about them.
Psyke.org Includes resources, poetry and stories written by teens who have suffered through self-injurious behavior to offer support to others

American Association of Suicidology Organization dedicated to understanding and prevention of suicide.  Link for understanding and helping a suicidal individual
The Trevor Project 24 hour Trevor Hotline:  1-866-488-7386.  Leading national organization focused on crisis & suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.

W.A.G.Y Watertown Area Gay Youth:  WAGY strives to make the Watertown Area a better place for self-identified transgender, bisexual, lesbian, gay and questioning youth by providing confidential peer support, education, and a safe social gathering.  Meetings held 6pm on Tuesday evenings
G.L.B.T. National Help Center Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender national hotline.  Offering peer counseling, online support and answers to FAQ's.
P.F.L.A.G. Parents, families and friends of lesbians and gays.  This link offers suggestions for acceptance
The Trevor Project Offers Dear Trevor - online Q&A for young people with questions surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity; Trevor Chat - online messaging service providing live help for LGBTQ youths on Fridays from 4 pm - midnight; and Trevor Space - and online social networking site for LGBTQ youths.
