Apply to a SUNY college or university using the online application

Apply to any of the private colleges/universities that use the Common Application

For New York State Community Colleges, be sure to go to the college website directly.  Many of these schools' applications can be accessed through the SUNY application system, but this will cost $50 / application.  Often, when you apply directly to the campus the application fees range from $0 to $25.

When Should I Apply to College?

I recommend that all applications be submitted any time after September 1 and before Thanksgiving vacation of the senior year.  Most seniors spend the month of October of their senior year revising essays and requesting letters of recommendation, to ensure that all materials have been submitted to the Guidance Office to be sent in November.  We try to get all packets submitted prior to the college admissions rush that occurs right after Thanksgiving break.  Note:  Often later applicants are held to higher admissions standards, so it is best to apply early.

Which Type of Admissions Should I Apply for?

HEOP / EOP ADMISSIONS PROGRAMS:  which help provide a broad range of services to New York State residents who, because of academic and economic circumstances, would otherwise be unable to attend a postsecondary educational institution.   Click on the links below to find out more about these programs and eligibility requirements

EOP (Equal Opportunity Program) at certain SUNY colleges

Resources for Writing College Admissions Essays

The best resource I can recommend for writing your college essay is a book by Elizabeth Wissner-Gross (2009).  Write your college essay in less than a day.  (New York, NY:  Ballantine)

The OWL at Purdue - Online Writing Lab offers advice on writing the personal statement, provides examples of well-written essays, provides advice from admissions representatives and lists the top 10 rules and pitfalls to remember when writing your essay.
