||Mrs. Miller- School Psychologist & Special Education Teacher
It is hard to believe this is my ninth year at LaFargeville as their school psychologist and special education teacher. I am also certified as a reading teacher. This year I am teaching special education students in Kindergarten and First grade.
In my many roles at LCS I am able to work with all students in Pre-K through 12th grade! My goal is to work with students, staff and parents so that each student is successful using their individual strengths.
Some of my roles at LCS-
I assess/test students to find out their strengths and weaknesses, then explain these test results at Committee on Special Education meetings to help determine if a student qualifies for special education services.
I lead the DIBELS assessment team, which is a screening for basic reading skills. We assess students in kindergarten to third grade. We look at who is on level, compared to national standards, on some of the Big 5 reading skills- phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, oral reading fluency and retell comprehension.
I observe students and consult with teachers about academic and behavioral strategies to use in the classroom.
I counsel students individually and in small group settings- Banana Splits in grades 1-6 for students of divorce/separation. Other possible groups are- social skills/friendship, anger management, organization/homework skills.
We have several counselors in the building this year. We are offering an anger management group for Grades 5-6 and a military support group for our elementary kids from military families.
I am the Chairperson for the Committee on Preschool Special Education. This year I will also be chairing the CSE meetings for grades K-6. I attend a county-wide Committee on Special Education chairperson's meetings which take place once a month, where state regulations are reviewed.
If you have a child who is experiencing any problems with academic, social, language or motor skills, you can refer them to the Committee on Special Education and see if they qualify for services.
